ABOUT:

Your child does not have to know how the pieces move or how to play (strategy) to participate in Chess Club.

We provide instruction according to US Chess Federation rules and playtime for all skill levels from complete beginner to advanced USCF competitor. It is open to homeschooled students in grades K-12.

We use tournament-style chess boards available during meeting times, but your child is welcome to purchase his/her own board. If your child is bringing a tournament board, we recommend that you mark the bottom of each piece and the back of the board with initials to avoid mix-ups of sets. You can order a red, green, or blue tournament set with board, pieces, and bag for $20, which we can pick up at the next scholastic chess tournament. Alternatively, you can look online to find more color variety and order on your own.

The Knights make local competition available by hosting an in-house club tournament each fall and a USCF scholastic tournament for the Houston area each spring. Team members also travel to schools around the Houston area to compete in scholastic tournaments. If your child is interested in competing in scholastic chess tournaments as part of the Lake Houston Knights Chess Team, please scroll down.

Advanced Chess Class

In addition to participation in our Chess Club, players have an option to:

1. Participate in scholastic chess tournaments with the Lake Houston Knights Homeschool chess team throughout the school year.

2.Take a group chess class with certified USCF Instructor, Ted Ingram, from 3:30-4:30 each Wednesday.  The cost is $75.00 per semester. Once the number of students is determined for that semester, and payment can be upfront or 3 monthly payments.

In order to take the class, we are requiring a minimum of 2 scholastic tournaments or 3 Friday night tournaments (e.g., Willowbrook) per semester. In addition, Mr. Ingram requires some play outside of class, which we will schedule and coordinate as needed. Each student will need to commit to the class and the tournaments for the semester.

Any players who compete in USCF scholastic chess tournaments as part of the Lake Houston Knights team must be homeschooled, regularly attend our meetings, and have paid dues for that semester. Homeschoolers may compete as individuals, but one of the Knights’ goals is to provide a supportive team atmosphere for competition.

Cost is $11 for a USCF membership plus the entry fee for each tournament (about $20 on average).
